NAD+ where to buy is usually answered with a vendor list, and a vendor list is the wrong shape of answer. The material is widely available and cheap. What varies between sellers is not the compound but the depth of the analytical record behind it, and one line of that record does more work than all the others combined.

That line is the bacterial endotoxin result. It is the assay FDA’s own compounding notice makes decisive for this substance, it is absent from most certificates in this market, and its absence is not visible unless you know to look for it. Check 1: grade is a manufacturing fact, not an adjective

NAD+ is produced at industrial scale for supplements, research reagents and cosmetic formulations. Material made for those markets is real NAD+, perfectly good at what it was made for, and was never released against a specification anyone intended to put in a vein.

FDA described exactly this pathway in a compounding notice whose content is current as of 30 October 2024. The agency stated it is aware of compounders using food grade nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide sold by repackagers to make intravenous products, and that ingredients identified as food grade are not suitable for compounding sterile drugs without appropriate processing, due to the high risk of contamination with microbes and endotoxins. It went further and urged manufacturers, including repackagers, to clearly identify on the label any ingredient intended for use in foods or dietary supplements, which is a request that only makes sense if the labelling is currently ambiguous enough for professionals to get it wrong.

That is the useful part for a buyer. If licensed pharmacies with quality systems were sourcing food grade material without realising it, a research buyer reading a product page has no chance of telling the difference by inspection. The only way through is to ask in writing, and to notice when the answer describes the compound rather than the grade.

Check 2: the endotoxin result, and why it outranks purity

Endotoxins are lipopolysaccharide fragments from the outer membrane of Gram negative bacteria. Two properties make them the governing problem here. They are heat stable, so a process that reliably kills bacteria can leave their debris entirely intact. And they are pyrogenic at very low concentrations, which is why the pharmacopoeial limits are expressed in endotoxin units rather than in any mass unit a purity assay would report.

The consequence for a certificate of analysis is that endotoxin is invisible to every other test on the page. Reversed phase HPLC integrates peak areas at a chosen wavelength and answers the question of how much of what the detector saw was the target compound. Mass spectrometry confirms identity. Neither one is looking at pyrogen load, so a certificate reporting a high purity figure and nothing else is silent on the risk that matters, not reassuring about it.

The test itself is standard and inexpensive relative to the material. FDA maintains a guidance document on pyrogen and endotoxins testing, revised in March 2026, that sets out how the bacterial endotoxins test is applied and validated, and independent method comparisons have been published for the assay formats in routine use, including the recombinant alternatives to the traditional lysate reagent. None of this is exotic. A supplier that has not run it has made a decision about cost, not encountered a technical obstacle.

The reason to place this check second rather than fifth is what FDA reported alongside the food grade finding: adverse event reports following use of NAD+ injectable drugs, including severe chills, shaking, vomiting and fatigue, with some cases requiring medical treatment, and the agency’s assessment that these reactions are consistent with excessive levels of endotoxins. That is the failure mode this market actually produces. It is not hypothetical and it is not about counterfeit compound.

Checks 3 and 4: identity and purity, and the gap between them

NAD+ has no sequence, so the shortcut a peptide buyer uses, matching a measured mass against a known sequence, is unavailable. Identity here means a method that distinguishes NAD+ from the closely related nucleotides and degradation products sharing much of its structure, and from its reduced form.

Purity, separately, is a ratio: the proportion of detected material that was the target, silent on anything the detector cannot see. Water content by Karl Fischer titration is the companion figure worth having on a solid, because water is mass on the label that is not compound in the vial and it does not appear in an HPLC area percentage.

Ask for the chromatogram rather than the summary. A trace has a wavelength, a retention time, a baseline and a set of minor peaks, and all four are inspectable. A percentage in a table has none of those properties. Checks 5 to 7: lot matching, custody and claim hygiene

A certificate becomes evidence about your purchase only through the lot number, so this check is procedural rather than analytical: read the lot on the vial, read the lot on the paper, confirm they are the same string. A product line document fails it while containing nothing untrue, which is why it survives casual inspection.

Custody shows up in commitments rather than claims. A forwarding storefront and one holding domestic inventory look identical on a product page, and only the second can promise same day dispatch before a stated cut off, because a forwarder does not control the first leg. Claim hygiene is the proxy for everything you cannot see. Research use labelling carries no analytical guarantee, and its diagnostic value is in the breach: a seller publishing dosing schedules or clinical outcome claims has abandoned the only position it was entitled to occupy, and is a poor bet on the parts of its operation you cannot inspect.

The unresolved row is the important one and we are leaving it unresolved on purpose. Publishing two independent certificates per lot is a stronger documentary position than most of this market holds, and it still does not answer the endotoxin question by itself, because identity and purity panels are the standard scope and endotoxin is an addition to them. Ask for it by name. A seller that has it will send it; a seller that does not will send you a purity figure again, and that answer is the answer.

Grading the evidence: settled biochemistry, unfinished clinical case

Two claims about NAD+ get conflated constantly and they sit at different evidence tiers. That NAD+ is a central redox cofactor, consumed by enzymes including sirtuins and PARPs, with a metabolism that changes with age, is textbook cell biology backed by a large peer reviewed literature. That infusing it produces a clinical benefit in any named condition is a separate proposition with a thin evidence base, and the first does not carry the second.

The human pharmacology of infused NAD+ is unusually sparse for a substance sold this widely. A pilot study published in 2019 was, on its authors’ account, the first to document what happens to directly infused NAD+ in a human cohort, and it found that plasma NAD+ and its measured metabolites did not change until after two hours, a profile consistent with rapid enzymatic removal from circulation. The point for a buyer is the date and the scale rather than the finding: a first, in 2019, on a small pilot cohort.

An HPLC purity figure is a ratio of peak areas at a chosen wavelength: it says how much of what the detector saw was the target compound. Endotoxin is not something that detector sees. A certificate can report 99 percent purity and carry no information at all about pyrogen load, which is why the two results are separate assays on separate lines.
Is NAD+ a peptide?
No. NAD+ is a coenzyme, a small molecule every cell makes and spends as an electron carrier in energy metabolism. It has no sequence, so verification questions built around matching a measured mass to a known sequence do not transfer. Identity is still confirmed analytically, but the questions that decide an NAD+ purchase are grade and endotoxin.
Should the certificate be specific to my lot?
Yes, and this is the check most often failed quietly. A product line certificate describes a compound; a batch certificate describes the material in the vial you were sent, and the lot number is the only link between them. Does the lot printed on the vial appear on the document you were given? If not, the document describes a substance rather than your purchase.
